Genpower Australia was engaged to provide a containerised generator solution to be installed in the highlands of a South Pacific island to supply electrical power for their telecommunications network.

Genpower Australia has manufactured many different containerised genset & bulk fuel tank packages but the unusual location of this project brought several challenges that we had to find resolutions for.

The steep mountain ranges and virtually impenetrable jungle at the location required the containerised generator to be designed and constructed in our workshop, so that it could be easily dismantled for transportation by a helicopter from the nearest town to the top of the mountain range and then reassembled again by local contractors.

It was crucial to have the weight and size of the individual components within the limits that the helicopter being used in that region could carry.  The modified 10' shipping container was fabricated with strengthening braces to allow it to be split in half horizontally at the weather-sealed flange around the perimeter of the container.  Using this method, the container was "Heli-lifted" as an upper half, a lower half and the container end doors in separate journeys. The bulk diesel tank and its bund tank were lifted on other trips, with the partially dismantled generator being taken up the mountain on a few other flights.

Not having the opportunity to have a suitable crane on the mountain top, the specification was made even more demanding because the entire assembly had to be re-constructed on-site by having the components slung below the helicopter and lowered into position to be bolted together.

See the attached photos and view the short movie on this page to get a better idea of the complexity of this assignment and the ingenuity used by Genpower Australia to successfully accomplish this extraordinary and interesting project.
